RSPB Big garden Birdwatch.

We have been getting ready to take part in the RSPB’s birdwatch in two weeks time. We have filled our new bird feeders and have been  helping Daddy build a bird table. We are very excited and have our spotters sheets ready. For more information, go to the RSPB site here

Update:

We had great fun taking part in the big garden birdwatch today. Isaac and i set up a camera in the garden and using a remote control were able to take photo’s from inside.

The lady next door threw out some bread for the birds just as we started. We spotted lots of Herring gull, Rooks, Carrion Crows and Jackdaws. Once they had flown away some smaller birds came to the feeders. Lots of house sparrows and a starling.

Typically there was no sign of the dunnock, robin, blackbirds, songthrush, redwing, great tit, chaffinch, goldfinch or green woodpecker that we have seen over the last fortnight!

What birds can you spot in your garden?

Challenge #2 : “At the Seaside”

This is another ‘open’ challenge that will run all summer…

  • What we can find at the seaside ?

For inspiration this is a flickr slideshow from the British Marine Life Study Society

If you’re going to go spotting on the beach remember to be careful, follow the ‘seashore code, and watch out out for the tide ! You can download some rockpooling pdf’s here: bbc/breathingplaces/marineweek/

Here’s some more links to usefull websites for more info:

Tell us what you find down at the beach this summer !

Oh, and if you live in the middle of the prairies, or on a mountain-side, ;-), or you’re just not going to the seaside this summer, wildlife spotted at rivers and lakes will count too !

Teething troubles…{solved}!!!

Update:

The Posting Photos page has been revised again, I’ve solved the problem that was preventing images from showing up. it should be much easier for everyone now !

Thanks to all who’ve contributed so far, appologies to those who’ve tried adding photos to their comments using the original instructions I supplied- it didn’t work !!

Short story: I’ve had to add a plug-in  to make it possible for photos to be added to comments. I’ve updated the instructions on the Posting Photos page and it should work for everyone now !

Also : New instructions added for picasaweb and flickr users !

Challenge #1 : “In your Garden”

An easy challenge to start off with:

Lets see if we can find some interesting wildlife in our gardens this week. Use the comments to add your finds to this post.

Good luck from Isaac

Note: This is an “open challenge” there is no time limit. You can add anything you spot in your garden to this post whenever you like !

Lacock Abbey bug hunt

Today i visited Laycock Abbey, they had a bug hunting day. We fished in a pond with some little nets. In the water were some snails, tadpoles, waterboatmen and pond skaters. We had a picnic on the bench and spotted butterflies, bees and ladybirds on flowers nearby. I got a bat sticker for my wild child book. It was sunny and cloudy.

They had some brilliant laminated identification guides which can be found at

Secret World – hedgehog and tortoise weekend

_A2F1543

At the weekend I visited Secret World for their hedgehog and tortoise weekend. The hedgehogs were all asleep but i did see; a huge tortoise, two foxes, some owls, guinea pigs, chickens, ferrets and i held a rabbit. I made a bee hotel and Jacob made a bird feeder, I got a t-shirt. They have a brilliant playground, i had a fun day.
